Why replace it
The bathroom is one of the places in the house where most falls happen, and climbing out of a high-sided bath has a lot to do with it. Replacing it with a non-slip shower tray, flush with the floor or with the smallest possible step, solves the problem in one or two days, without renovating the whole bathroom.
It is also a very common change in holiday lets and second homes on the coast: a roomy shower is quicker to clean, uses less water than a bath and looks better in the listing photos.
We have been renovating bathrooms between Sotogrande and Estepona for more than 15 years. We take out the bath, fit a made-to-measure tray, tile the space to match and install the screen, with new taps and all the rubble removed.

How we do it
The tray and the screen are what you see; what decides whether there are problems later is what goes underneath.
A non-slip tray cut to the size of the space, flush with the floor or with the smallest possible step.
We adapt the waste so that the tray has just the right fall and water does not sit.
A badly levelled tray puddles: it is bedded on a solid base and checked before tiling.
When the bath comes out, the wall it was hiding is exposed.
We tile only that space, with a tile as close as possible to the one you already have.
We tell you at the visit and suggest alternatives, such as a contrasting tile in the shower area.
The shower area gets wet every day: if a single gap is left, water ends up leaking into the flat below.
We seal the joint between the tray and the wall, and the tile edges, before fitting the screen.
Grout and silicone made for wet areas, with no gaps left.
If the change is for mobility reasons, it is worth thinking about support aids too.
At the visit we tell you which aids can be fitted, such as a grab rail or a fold-down seat.
The non-slip tray and the minimal step are what make getting in and out safest.
